This study seeks to gather and clarify the terminology for carpets used by peoples of Central Asia from
about 300 BCE to 1000 CE time, including terms in Kharoṣṭhi, Khotanese, Sanskrit and its relatives,
plus Persian, Sogdian, Chinese, and Turkic.
This article opened my eyes to the historical depth behind something as familiar as a carpet. Understanding the cross-cultural terms adds a whole new layer to appreciating carpets in our homes today.
The connection between the Silk Road and carpet culture is so intriguing. I’ve been exploring traditional carpets for my home and understanding their historical roots makes me appreciate them even more. Will you cover visual examples of these early designs in a future post?
