In Beijing, a subway ride away at the national library of China is a historical photo exhibition of the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes.
In 1900, thieves were drawn to Dunhuang --they pillaged Buddhist scripture and smuggled them abroad, but they also took a great number of pictures. The show gathers hundreds of photos taken during those so-called "expeditions", as well as some from Chinese academic circles.
These include pictures of the old Dunhuang county, the Crescent Spring and also pictures of the MoGao Grottoes shot from various angles. They reveal the Grottoes’ original features, and are precious to today’s grottoes protection and archaeological research.
The show is open free to the public until November 30th.
