130 Buddhist artworks are about to embark on a journey to the other side of the Strait, to Kaohsiung in north Taiwan. From mid-September people there will be able to appreciate a selection of antiques discovered in recent years along the Silk Road.
From both the space and time frame, the exhibition will trace the journey of Buddhism from west to east. One of the pieces is this bronze gilded Buddha sculpture.
Wu Xinhua, Researcher, China Academy of Social Sciences, said, "Here we have the typical lotus, but it’s not exactly the same as what we see in traditional Buddhist artworks. It’s one of the most representative pieces of how Buddhism has evolved in China."

Also on the list of items headed to Taiwan is this Shariputra container from the Tang Dynasty. It’s another perfect example of how the two cultures collide with each other.
Wu Xinhua, Researcher, China Academy of Social Sciences, said, "It’s shaped like a coffin, but the Shariputra and the cremation is purely Buddhist. So it’s a combination of traditional Chinese culture with Buddhism."
Other exhibits include Buddhist murals, scriptures and instruments used in religious ceremonies. The exhibition runs from September 14th til December 8th. But first, the treasures will go through a final inspection before their journey.
