From 14/05/2014 18:30 To 14/05/2014 20:00

The BRISTOL SOCIETY for the ARTS of ASIA

Wednesday 14th May, 6.30 to 8 p.m.

Helen Persson, Curator, Chinese Textiles & Dress, Department of Asia, Victoria & Albert Museum:
“SILK ROAD TEXTILES from the STEIN COLLECTION Loan to the
VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM”

STEIN.490 (Ch.0086), a silk banner fragment from Cave 17, Dunhuang, about 10th century.

“The Victoria and Albert Museum is the custodian of a stunning and historically invaluable collection of nearly 600 textile fragments and over 70 ceramics and Buddhist objects, all retrieved from the chain of abandoned settlements on oases along the Silk Road.  The textile fragments were brought back from three long expeditions made by Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943) between 1900 and 1916.  They comprise a wide variety of different techniques and materials, with examples ranging from domestic textiles to sacral objects. The greater part of this unique but little-known collection comes from Cave 17 of the Mogao Grottoes, near the oasis town of Dunhuang, in the Chinese province of Gansu. Focussing on highlights of the collection, the talk will offer a glimpse of the rich cultural melting pot of Central Asia in the first millennium of our era.”
