One of the first Western travellers to cross the Wakhan corridor

A few days ago I posted an article from the year 2002 in the Smithsonian Magazine about a adventure by two Americans, Francis O'Donnell and Denis Belliveau who around 1993/94 did an expedition to retrace the steps made by Marco Polo in the 13th Century.
About their adventure they realised a website "In the Footsteps of Marco Polo ".

With the new Netflix series Marco Polo still running, it's a good moment and look back with me to a journey, not so long ago:

Two Americans retrace the steps of the 13th-century Italian merchant through a harsh land of tough, hospitable people





After seeing this article Francis O' Donnell wrote me the following additional information which puts one and another in the right perspective:

The dream was to be the first expedition in history to retrace the entire route of Marco Polo, and by some miracle we did so. We came to find however there are many gray areas, places lost forever in the annals of time. So when Smithsonian , who vetted our journey thoroughly stated that “ They are almost certainly the first to approximate Polo's steps through Eurasia entirely by land and sea, without resorting to helicopters or airplanes”, that was confirmation and validation enough for use ! We had informed them of our intentions before leaving , and stayed in contact with them through our liaisons back home during our travels. When they heard we had successfully completed the Afghan leg of our journey , they asked us to write an article for their magazine. What an honor, we felt , one of the most prestigious and highly regarded magazines on art , history and culture , in the world, to be in it's pages would certainly help us in the furtherance of our effort. We were in financial trouble at that point and our success was anything but guaranteed. Reaching Beijing in late February 1994 ,it was cold and gray , so we hunkered down in the Chinese capital for two weeks. We locked ourselves away in our room and wrote , we did little sight seeing or the work we needed to in our pursuit of looking for and documenting what we could of Marco's account , we seldom went out. We believed we had submitted a strong piece , crossed our fingers and continued on. Several weeks later we got the word they had rejected our article , saying “ There was to much action in it and it read like something from soldier of fortune “. This was a blow in several ways , there would be no money for the article , rejection is never a good feeling, but in the past we had always been able to use the negativity of others , to harden , motivate and inspire ourselves “ We will show them “ was how we handled nay sayers. I can't tell you how many people , scholars and other so called “experts “ who told us it can't be done , and if it can, it isn't going to be by you two ! This time was different , it took the wind out of my partners sails , as he felt somehow perhaps his photo's were not up to par, and played a part in their decision. I assured him that was “ Nonsense “ and that he was an excellent photographer. I continued saying “ We had nothing to worry about , that we needed to stay focused on the mission, that was what counted ! “ First things first, let us put the horse before the cart as it were. In truth I told him, we had yet to accomplish anything extraordinary , and when we got home, having been successful, things would be different. The truth was we had , we had done something extraordinary , we had been the first westerners in a generation to enter and cross the Wakhan corridor. A place we knew before we left home would be the crowning jewel of our expedition and it was . In the town of Ishkashim which is split and divided by a branch of the Oxus river , I stood looking out at the mighty spires guarding the entrance. The Hindu Kush to the south and the Pamirs , the Roof of the world to the north. Marked on our map, which we first plotted at home , it was one of the obstacles, if crossed would separate us from all the failed attempts before us . There I contemplated , asking the universe why , why is it me ? Why am I being so blessed , knowing that soon I would traverse that mythic corridor . The Wakhan, a lost and all but forgotten secret passage into the back door of China. The other obstacles were getting into Iran , our biggest challenge as Americans  and traversing the entire southern route along the Silk Road which at that time was mostly closed and off limits to foreigners and there were others in fact we had just barely survived, one the Afghan civil war. The reason for our Smithsonian disappointment. 
The soviet Army left Afghanistan in 1989 , via the “Friendship bridge “ Uzbekistan. In 1993 after weeks of interrogation and consternation the newly FSB , former KGB, finally relented and let us cross into war torn Afghanistan. This too was no small feet , as Americans, our country helped the Mujahedin insurgents defeat the soviet forces . I am sure they would have rather bit off their tongue  then see us cross . We were the first westerners to do so , aside from United Nations and other NGO types. What ensued was indeed something out of soldier of fortune  as we were captured in a fire fight , ironically by the descendants of the very same tribe of people, Polo described as almost capturing him but killing and enslaving many of his companions . We came under the protection of an Afghan warlord and crossed the bulk of the country with our own heavily armed contingent of bodyguards. 1993/4 was part of an era called the “ Warlord period “. In many ways it was more dangerous than the Soviet and Taliban periods and subsequent American intervention ! There was a total power vacuum and all out anarchy among the different Afghan Mujaheddin factions that were vying for power. A paradise , or hell on earth , these are the two visions we had of Afghanistan. In the Wakhan area people only knew Marco Polo by the sheep that has been given his name as he was the first to describe to western science  the “ Ovis Poli “. Everywhere else we encountered fierce, strong , proud and handsome people, friendly and giving . People who on the whole ached for peace and an end to war . The peace that we wholeheartedly prayed for in the Smithsonian article  and one that the country is so deserving of and is still sadly illusive. Tragically the misery continues, with no end in sight. God help Afghanistan. Upon returning home the response we got from all the major media players was “ Isn't that nice , well congratulations  but we are so sorry, Americas aren't interested in this part of the world … now if you had something on national parks ? “ America in it's never ending self involvement was to busy making money during the dot com bubble to worry about the mess left behind in Afghanistan  or the formation of Al - Qaeda  and the blow back that was impending. It was like throwing pearls before swine . It wasn't until 911 that people woke up to the world . That morning , before the second plane hit the towers Denis called me and said “ The key to the whole thing is Pakistan” . An insight and a word, I didn't hear come out of any TV pundits mouth for over a week ! After the initial shock wore off , I picked up the phone and called the Smithsonian. I had kept my foot in the door , staying in touch with the editor in chief , sending him Christmas cards and e- mailing him now and then on a variety of subjects over the years. The outcome was the article           “ Marco Polo's guide to Afghanistan “ of which I am proud but doesn't come close to doing our story justice. Even this follow up is extremely compressed. 
I will leave it as Marco did more than 700 years ago … “ I haven't told you half of what I have seen “ !

Afghanistan announced the creation of its second national park this week, a new protected area that is 25 percent larger than Yellowstone National Park in the U.S.


Wakhan National Park encompasses soaring mountains, alpine grasslands, and unique wildlife in the northeastern part of Afghanistan, where it will preserve the traditional ways of life practiced by communities inside its borders.

Prince Mostapha Zaher, the director-general of Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency, called it "one of the last truly wild places on the planet." Zaher said his grandfather, King Zaher Shah, had first dreamed of creating a national park in the area in the 1950s.

"We can prove that the cause of protecting the environment and wildlife can also be utilized as an instrument of peace and tolerance," said Zaher.

"The government of Afghanistan understands that it is absolutely essential for reconstruction to protect its natural resources," adds Peter Zahler, the deputy director of the Asia program for the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, which worked with the Afghan government to establish the park.

The founding of the vast new park—which is 4,200 square miles (about a million hectares)—builds on the success Afghanistan has had with its first national park, Band-e Amir, which was designated in 2009.

"The communities in Band-e Amir love it," says Zahler. "[The park] has brought attention, tourists, and jobs. [So] the communities in Wakhan are really enthusiastic."

The Wakhan District—profiled in a February 2013 National Geographicmagazine feature—is a narrow corridor of land jutting off the northeastern tip of Afghanistan. It is bordered by Pakistan to the south, China to the east, and Tajikistan to the north. The region contains the headwaters of the Amu Darya River and is the place where the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountains meet.

"It is a very isolated, cold, high mountain valley with peaks on both sides," says Zahler, who has been working on conservation in Afghanistan since 2006.

The wildlife of Wakhan, he adds, is "astonishingly diverse." It is a place where wolves, lynx, and brown bears from the north mix with snow leopards, stone martens, and the elusive Pallas's cat. It is also home to ibex, red foxes, and Marco Polo sheep—the world's largest wild sheep, with horns that stretch nearly six feet (two meters) from tip to tip. "The image of Afghanistan is of a dry, empty country," says Zahler, "but it has nine species of wild cats-as many as all of sub-Saharan Africa [which had 11 species before cheetahs and tigers were pushed out by hunters]."

A Park That Protects People

Wakhan National Park includes the entire Wakhan District, home to about 15,000 people, most of them ethnic Wakhi or Krygyz.

Thanks to an agreement with the Afghan government, the locals will be allowed to stay in the park. They will co-manage it with the federal government, and many will get jobs as rangers, managers, and other park personnel.

Local people will also be able to keep making a living off the land. The landscape is too high in altitude for much farming, Zahler says, so most people in Wakhan survive by herding livestock—largely sheep and goats, along with some cattle, horses, and domesticated yaks.

A precise management plan for the park still has to be worked out, but Zahler says the idea is to have different zones. Some zones will be wildlife reserves. Others will be set aside for multiple uses, including grazing.

The region has not faced many threats from logging because it is primarily above the treeline, or from mining because it is so remote, says Zahler. But it has suffered from poaching and overgrazing.
Zahler says enforcement at the new park should help, as should ongoing collaborative efforts with the local communities.

The Benefits of Tourism?

Each year about 100 to 300 international tourists visit the Wakhan corridor, Zahler says. "It's not a lot, but this is one of the most impoverished regions in Afghanistan, which is one of the more impoverished countries on the planet. It is an area that is desperate for help, and even a few tourists make a big difference." (See "Afghan Ski Challenge Promotes Tourism to War-Weary Hindu Kush.")

Accessibility is part of the problem. Getting to Wakhan takes some effort: An overland trip from Kabul takes a week. Though a new airstrip was recently added, many tourists still enter the area through Tajikistan, which has fewer security concerns.

In 2008, National Geographic Adventure magazine named Wakhan one of its "25 Best New Trips in the World." Zahler says he hopes the new national park will spark more visits as roads and trails are added and word gets out.

The Wakhan corridor, he adds, is "extremely safe—as safe as any high-mountain area can be." The region has not seen recent violence, the Taliban "have no interest in it," and the people "are very welcoming."

Still, he says, that success may hinge on the country's overall stability and security.
In the meantime, Zahler says his organization has proposed a comprehensive list of new parks for Afghanistan. The government is receptive to the idea, he says, and hopes to designate more over time.

When it comes to understanding the value of parks, says Zahler, "Afghanistan really gets it."

Emperor Qianlong's throne sells for $5.15 mln in Nanjing



A throne belonging to Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) during the Qing Dynasty has sold for 32 million yuan ($5.15 million) at an auction in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province, the Modern Express reported on Monday.
The seat, made of rosewood and inlaid with gold and an exquisite floral pattern, was owned by philanthropist Li Chunping and given a starting price of 30 million yuan.
After three rounds of bidding, a mysterious buyer from Beijing bought it for 32 million yuan.
Li said the final price was lower than he expected and that the throne will be valued at over 100 million yuan after two or three years.
He also said it took him three years to buy the throne from a descendant of a royal highness of the Qing Dynasty in Tianjin.
Li promised to donate the money from the auction to charitable causes.

Flowing rivers of mercury


Philip Ball investigates claims that the burial chamber of China’s first emperor contains rivers of shimmering mercury.

The Chinese emperor had done all he could to become immortal, but in vain. His physicians had prepared herbal and alchemical elixirs, but none could stave off his decline. He had sent a minister on a voyage far over the eastern seas in search of a mythical potion of eternal life. But that expedition never returned, and now the quest seemed hopeless. So Qin Shi Huangdi, the First Emperor of a unified China in the third century BC, had begun preparations for the next best thing to an endless life on Earth. He would continue his cosmic rule from the spirit world, and his underground tomb would be a palace for the afterlife, complete with its own army of life-size clay soldiers.
 
Those terracotta warriors lay hidden for two thousand years beneath several metres of sandy soil a mile from the First Emperor’s burial mound at Mount Li, to the northeast of the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi province of north-central China. They were rediscovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well, and Chinese archaeologists were astonished to find over the next decade that there were at least 8000 of them, once brightly painted and equipped with clay horses and wooden chariots. As further excavation revealed the extent of the emperor’s mausoleum, with offices, stables and halls, along with clay figures of officials, acrobats and labourers and life-size bronze animals, it became clear that the Han dynasty historian Sima Qian, writing in second century BC, hadn’t been exaggerating after all. He claimed that 700,000 men had worked on the emperor’s tomb, constructing entire palaces, towers and scenic landscapes through which which the emperor’s spirit might roam.

No one knows what other wonders the mausoleum might house, for the main burial chamber – a football-pitch-sized hall beneath a great mound of earth – remains sealed. Most enticing of all is a detail relayed by Qian: ‘Mercury was used to fashion the hundred rivers, the Yellow river and the Yangtze river, and the seas in such a way that they flowed’. This idea that the main chamber contains a kind of microcosm of all of China (as it was then recognised) with rivers, lakes and seas of shimmering mercury had long seemed too fantastic for modern historians to grant it credence. But if Qian had not been inventing stories about other elaborate features of the mausoleum site, might his account of the tomb chamber be reliable too?  
 
In the 1980s Chinese researchers found that the soil in the burial mound above the tomb contains mercury concentrations way above those elsewhere in the vicinity. Now some archaeologists working on the site believe that the body of the First Emperor may indeed lie amidst vast puddles of the liquid metal.  
 
Yet it seems unlikely that anyone will gaze on such a sight in the foreseeable future. ‘We have no current plan to open the chambers,’ explains archaeologist Qingbo Duan of Northwest University in Xi’an, who led the mausoleum excavations from 1998 to 2008. ‘We have no mature technologies and effective measures to protect the relics,’ he says. So can we ever know the truth about Qin Shi Huangdi’s rivers of mercury? 
 

A harsh legacy

The construction of this immense mausoleum started fully 36 years before the emperor’s death in 210BC, when he was merely King Zheng of the kingdom of Qin – a realm occupying the valley of the Wei, a major tributary of the Yellow river, now in Shaanxi. Qin was one of seven states within China at that time, all of which had been vying for supremacy since the fifth century BC in what is known as the Warring States period. By finally defeating the last of the rival states in 221BC, Zheng became Qin Shi Huangdi (meaning the First Qin Emperor), ruler of all China.
 
Some etymologies trace the name China itself to the First Emperor dynasty (pronounced ‘chin’), and so you might imagine that it would have a very special status in Chinese history. But the unified state barely outlasted the death of the First Emperor himself – four years later it succumbed to a rebellion that became the much more durable Han dynasty (206BC–AD220). The Qin dynasty is regarded with little fondness in China today, for the First Emperor was a tyrant who ruled with brutal force.
 

What hides within

Yet there’s reluctant admiration in the way Qian describes the magnificence of the First Emperor’s tomb. ‘In ancient China, people believed the souls of the dead would live forever underground, so they would prepare almost everything from real life to bury for use in the afterlife,’ says Yinglan Zhang, an archaeologist at the Shaanxi History Museum in Xi’an and deputy director of the mausoleum excavations from 1998 to 2007. Given what has already been unearthed, he says ‘there should be many other cultural artefacts or relics still buried in the tomb chamber or other burial pits around the tomb – maybe things beyond our imagination’.
 
 
The pits housing the terracotta army lie outside the 2km by 1km boundary wall of the burial mound. Inside this wall are ritual buildings once containing food and other items that the emperor would need to sustain him. There are chambers full of stone armour that could protect against evil spirits, and it is possible that the emperor himself might not have been interred alone in the main chamber: Qian says that officials were buried there with him, and it’s not clear if they were alive or dead at the time.

The mound itself was originally about 0.5km by 0.5km (erosion has shrunk it a little) and the burial chamber lies about 30–40m below the original ground surface. Its shape has been mapped out by measuring gravity anomalies in the ground – an indication of hollow or less dense structures – and by looking for changes in the electrical resistivity of the soil, which result from buried structures or cavities. In this way, Chinese archaeologists have figured out the basic layout of the tomb over the past several decades. The chamber is about 80m east to west by 50m north to south, surrounded by a wall of closely packed earth and – to judge from other ancient Chinese tombs – perhaps water-proofed with stone covered with red lacquer. In 2000 researchers discovered that towards the edge of the mound an underground dam and drainage system helps to keep water away from the chamber. So there’s some reason to believe that the tomb itself might be relatively intact: neither wholly collapsed nor water-filled.
 

Quicksilver courses

Measurements of soil resistivity have revealed another intriguing feature. They show a so-called phase anomaly, which is produced when an electrical current is reflected from a conducting surface, such as a metal. Could this be a sign of mercury?
 
The first detailed study of mercury levels in the mound were conducted in the early 1980s, when researchers from the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring sunk small boreholes into the soil over an area of 12,000m2 in the centre of the mound and extracted soil samples for analysis. Whereas soils outside this central region contained an average of 30ppb of mercury, the average above the chamber was 250ppb, and in some places rose to 1500ppb. A second survey in 2003, by a different team that included Duan, found much the same result: unusually high concentrations of mercury both in the soil itself and in the interstitial vapours between grains.

From the grid of borehole samples in the earlier study one can construct a rough map of how the high levels of mercury are distributed. ‘There is no unusual amount of mercury in the northwest corner of the tomb,’ says Duan, ‘while the mercury level is highest in the northeast and second highest in the south’. If you squint at this distribution, you can persuade yourself that it matches the locations of the two great rivers of China – the Yellow and Yangtze – as seen from the ancient Qin capital of Xianyang, close to modern Xi’an. ‘The distribution of mercury level corresponds to the location of waterways in the Qin empire,’ Duan says. In other words, the tomb might indeed contain a facsimile of the empire, watered by mercury.
 
Zhang, however, isn’t so sure that one can conclude much from the present day mercury distribution. He thinks that the tomb chamber must have collapsed thousands of years ago, just like the pits containing the terracotta army. ‘The mercury will have volatilised into nearby soils during this long time, so it would be impossible to show up detailed information that we can connect with particular rivers or lakes,’ he concludes.
 

Elixirs of immortality 

In any case, just because the mausoleum apparently contains a lot of mercury doesn’t in itself verify Qian’s account. Mercury had other uses too, particularly in alchemy, which has some of its oldest roots in China. In the west this art was commonly associated with attempts to make gold from other metals, and some Chinese alchemists tried that too – in 144BC the Han emperor Jingdi decreed that anyone caught trying to make counterfeit gold should be executed. But Chinese alchemy was more oriented towards medicinal uses, in particular elixirs of immortality.

And perhaps mercury (in Chinese ‘shui yin’, literally ‘water silver’) was the key to these. Chinese legend tells of one Huang An, who prolonged his life for at least 10,000 years by eating mercury sulfide (the mineral cinnabar).The First Emperor was said to have consumed wine and honey laden with cinnabar thinking it would prolong his life, and some have speculated that he might have hastened his death with these ‘medicines’. 
 
During the Warring States period, mercury was a common ingredient of medicines being used to treat infected sores, scabies, ringworm and (even more alarmingly) as a sedative for mania and insomnia. Because it is bright red, cinnabar was also used for art and decoration in China since around the second millennium BC. Its artificial form, produced in the west since the Roman era, became known as the pigment vermilion. 
 
One of the most important uses of mercury at this time has a particularly alchemical tinge. Gold and silver dissolve in mercury to form amalgams, and such mixtures were used for gilt plating. The amalgam was rubbed on and heated to evaporate the mercury leaving behind a gleaming coat of precious metal. Such mixtures also featured in alchemical elixirs: the Daoist concept of yin and yang, the two fundamental and complementary principles of life, encouraged an idea that cold, watery (yang) mercury and bright, fiery (yin) gold might be blended in ideal proportions to sustain vitality. 
 

Obtaining mercury

Throughout antiquity cinnabar was the source of all mercury metal. There was a lot of this mineral in China, particularly in the west. Shaanxi alone contains almost a fifth of all the cinnabar reserves in the country, and there are very ancient mines in Xunyang county in the south of the province that are a good candidate source of the mercury apparently in the First Emperor’s tomb. 
 
To extract mercury from cinnabar one need only roast it in air, converting the sulfur to sulfur dioxide while the mercury is released as vapour that can then be condensed. Since mercury boils at 357°C, this process needs temperatures well within the capabilities of Qin-era kilns. Of course, anyone trying this method in an unsealed container – closed chambers weren’t used until the Han period – risked serious harm.
 
‘The emperor was said to have consumed cinnabar to prolong his life’
But despite there being a mature mercury-refining technology by the time of the First Emperor, and although Zhang attests that ‘the people of the Qin Dynasty had some basic chemical knowledge’, Duan argues that Chinese alchemy was still in its infancy in that period. In particular, he says, there is no good reason to think that the practice of soaking dead bodies in mercury to prevent their decay, common during the Song dynasty in the 10th to 13th centuries AD, was used as early as the Qin dynasty. So even though mercury, either as cinnabar or as the elemental metal, has been found in tombs dating back as far as the second millennium BC, it’s not clear why it was put there. Might its toxicity have acted as a deterrent to grave-looters? Probably not – the dangers of mercury fumes were not recognised until Han times. So if, as it seems, there’s a lot of mercury in the burial chamber, it’s unlikely to be either a preservative or an anti-theft device. 
 
Yet even if this mercury was indeed used for fantastical landscaping, Duan doubts that there can have been much of it. Based on estimates of mercury production from the Song era and allowing for the imperfections of the earlier refinement process, he thinks the chamber might have contained at most 100 tons of the liquid metal: around 7m3.
 
We might never be able to check that. ‘Right now, our archaeological work is focused on deducing the basic layout of the tomb,’ says Duan. Because any breach in the seal could admit water or air that might damage whatever lies within, even robot-based exploration of the interior is ruled out. ‘If the chamber was opened even using a robot or drilling, the balance of the situation would be broken and the buried objects would deteriorate quickly,’ says Zhang.
 
So if we’re ever going to peek inside, it will have to be with better scientific techniques than are currently available. ‘I dream of a day when technology will shed light on all that is buried there, without disturbing the sleeping emperor and his 2000-year-old underground empire,’ says Yongqi Wu, director of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum. Maybe these concerns to preserve the unknown heritage will guarantee the First Emperor a kind of immortality after all.

Yuan-dynasty landscapes


Even better than the real thing 

“DWELLING in the Fuchun Mountains” is a famous Chinese landscape painting from the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368). A paper scroll measuring over 22 feet in length, it was revered for its virtuosity and transfixed collectors (a detail from the scroll is pictured). On his deathbed one owner even ordered its burning so that it could accompany him into the afterlife. A nephew managed to save it from the flames, though not before it had been torn in two.
The work inspired an 18th-century emperor, Qianlong, to compose no fewer than 40 poems: he said that the countryside that sprang from the brush of the artist, Huang Gongwang, was better than the real thing. Only later did scholars determine that Qianlong's painting—inscribed with odes he had written and affixed with his seals of appreciation—was actually a fake.
The art of putting ink to paper or silk to render trees, rocks, waters and mountains dates back to the third century AD, and emerged as a distinct genre in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907). After the Tang, artists of the Song dynasty refined and developed new styles. But it was during the subsequent Yuan that Chinese landscape painting, or shanshuihua, took on new meaning. The desolate huts half-obscured by pine trees reflected the artist’s inner life—mind and spirit in retreat from the Mongol forces that now ruled much of China.
An exhibition at the Freer-Sackler Gallery in Washington, DC, called “Style in Chinese Landscape Painting: The Yuan Legacy” considers the styles of four Yuan-dynasty masters whose techniques and aesthetics shaped the landscape traditions that followed them. The influence of a fifth artist, Zhao Mengfu, who worked in the Yuan imperial courts, is also touched upon. 
This could not have been an easy show to curate. Few great Yuan works survive, and those that do are mostly housed in museums in East Asia. “Yuan Legacy” contains only two original works by the painters whose impact is celebrated. Instead, it wisely concentrates on later works that show each man's style as it was copied and re-envisioned by inheritors of the tradition. 
An exhibition about the Yuan style that primarily shows Ming- and Qing-era paintings may seem perplexing, but it illustrates the idea of a legacy. The show’s curator, Stephen Allee, rightly observes that it is nearly impossible to speak of later Chinese landscapes without referring to earlier eras. The show includes a copy of a portion of “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” that was painted centuries later by Wang Hui, considered one of the greatest Qing painters. Evolution and continuity are both evident.
These works of blacks, greys and occasional other pale colours reveal startling range and expressiveness. For example, painters who drew from the aesthetic of Huang Gongwang, the oldest of the four Yuan artists, admired his voluptuous mountains and towering plateaus, formed by dragging a brush along the paper. 
Adherents of the style of Ni Zan tended to prefer dry inks that made their compositionslook almost like charcoal drawings, rather than paintings. Lake Tai, on whose shores Ni Zan lived, was a favourite subject of his: the centre of his works is often dominated by a vast, blank lake.
This tranquil simplicity contrasts starkly with the layered brushwork of Wang Meng, whose surfaces are dense with ink. “Dwelling in Seclusion in the Summer Mountains” (1354), one of the two dated Yuan-master paintings on show, has towering, rolling peaks heavily dotted with vegetation. Some lines look as fine as etchings.
But while the show has enjoyable breadth, it is lacking in depth. It offers little sense of what meaning each artist saw in his work. No translation and little context is offered for the inscriptions that are written on many of the pieces. This diminishes the visitor’s experience, since such paintings were thought to be incomplete without beautifully written words. Shanshuihua painters were also often able poets and calligraphers, though some artists and collectors would invite others whose poems and characters they admired to adorn their paintings. In fact, the original version of “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” was lost for years because an early owner of the original sent it off to be written on by calligraphers.
Columns of characters written by Wu Zhen, another Yuan master, appear above the people that float along his expansive scroll, “Fishermen, after Jing Hao” (1342). “Why is his silken line made so very frail and thin?/He only goes into the lake to feed a single person,” reads one poem. “He only fishes for perch, and does not fish for fame,” goes another. The paints were meant to evoke a mood, the words a philosophy. The latter have been left neglected in “Yuan Legacy”, and that is a pity.

Heavenly Horses: Equestrian Depictions in Ancient China

In the Chinese year of the horse , the MAO presents "Heavenly Horses: Equestrian Depictions in Ancient China", an exhibition that explores one of the key symbols of Chinese culture - the horse, an emblem of nobility, elegance, speed and power - through 45 works of great value. The show will exhibit pieces from the museum's own collection and those from a private collector.

The exhibition is taking place at the Museo d'Arte Orientale (MAO) in Turin, Italy, until February 22, 2015.

COMUNICATO STAMPA: I cavalli sono stati un simbolo di status sociale forte per l’élite cinese di ogni epoca e uno dei soggetti più rappresentati nell’arte della Cina imperiale. Emblemi di nobiltà, eleganza, velocità e potenza, si sono arricchiti nel corso del tempo di valenze soprannaturali ammantate di resoconti leggendari. Tra i più famosi di questi miti troviamo quello dei “Cavalli Celesti”, straordinari destrieri capaci di trasportare chi li cavalcava nelle terre degli immortali. In occasione dell’Anno del Cavallo, il Museo d’Arte Orientale intende omaggiare questa creatura che tanto peso ha avuto nella storia dei popoli con una mostra ad essa dedicata.
Attraverso quarantacinque opere provenienti dalle collezioni del museo e da una collezione privata torinese, la mostra esplora l’importanza della figura del cavallo nell’arte e nella cultura della Cina antica con spettacolari statuine funerarie a tutto tondo nel periodo che va dalla dinastia Han (206 a.C. – 220 d.C.) alla dinastia Tang (618-907 d.C.), elementi arcaici di bardature e di carri (XI sec. a.C. – II sec. d.C.), rilievi e ceramica dipinta (II sec. a.C. – I sec. d.C.). Si tratta in gran parte di sculture in terracotta dipinta e invetriata, dove i cavalli appaiono soli o in rapporto dinamico con il cavaliere, colorati e arricchiti di dettagli a seconda della funzione che l'immagine doveva evocare e rendere viva.
Il percorso espositivo è articolato in sette sezioni che corrispondono a diversi ambiti tematici: dalla guerra, al commercio, allo svago,  fino alla evoluzione delle forme tra gli Han e i Tang. Molti sono gli aspetti di storia e di civiltà che si intrecciano a questo itinerario. Per esempio, a partire dalla fine del IV secolo a.C., l'adozione della cavalleria, fondamento per la costituzione dell'Impero; l’apertura della cosiddetta “Via della Seta” sotto la dinastia Han (206 a.C. – 220 d.C.), che ebbe tra i suoi motori principali la ricerca nelle regioni occidentali di cavalli più grandi e più potenti; la diffusione di uno sport come il polo nel VII e VIII secolo; fino alle tecniche e alla concezione plastica, che vanno dalla stilizzazione potente dell’epoca Han al naturalismo idealizzato dei Tang, passando attraverso l’eleganza quasi pittorica dell’arte “medievale” nel VI secolo.

L'anno del cavallo nel calendario cinese Nel calendario tradizionale dell’Asia orientale, basato su cicli di sessanta anni, il 2014 è il trentunesimo anno e cade proprio a metà del ciclo in corso: rappresenta quindi un cambiamento di fase, un nuovo inizio. Sempre secondo questo computo del tempo, il 2014 è prima di tutto l’anno caratterizzato dal segno “zodiacale” del Cavallo e si colloca sotto l’influsso dell’elemento “Legno”, simbolo della primavera e del rinnovamento. Il cavallo è incarnazione di vivacità e vigore, ma anche di saggezza e talento, quindi l'anno sotto il suo segno è considerato ricco di forza vitale e di dinamismo.

Iniziative collaterali
 In occasione della mostra “Cavalli Celesti” saranno proposte conferenze e incontri di approfondimento con il pubblico, visite guidate dedicate, attività per scuole e famiglie. Gli appuntamenti andranno ad esplorare il significato del cavallo e delle sue raffigurazioni nella cultura cinese, tenendo in considerazione i raffronti con l’Occidente e con la Cina contemporanea.

The frustrating hunt for Genghis Khan’s long-lost tomb just got a whole lot easier

When Genghis Khan died, he didn’t want to be found. So soldiers in his burial party butchered anyone they saw on their way to his burial tomb. Then they killed the people who built the monument. Then, finally, they killed themselves. Who knows whether the perhaps apocryphal tale is true, but even today, nearly 800 years following the death of the greatest conqueror the world has ever known, the location of his tomb remains unknown.
Many people have tried to find it, from archaeologists who uncovered Genghis Khan’s palace to some attorney in Chicago who led an expedition to 60 unopened tombs in the Mongol warlord’s realm. The quest is for both history — and for riches. According to Mongolia Today, incredible treasures were buried with Genghis Khan from every corner of his vast empire and, as one researcher told the Associated Press, “if we find what items were buried with him, we could write a new page for world history.”
That page may be written sooner than many imagine. That’s thanks to a novel new way to search for the tomb that scours vast tracts of underpopulated and undulating Mongol terrain — from space. Yes, space.
“Ultra-high resolution satellite imaging enables a new paradigm in global exploration,” said study published last week in the journal PLOS One. But the breadth of the search was so daunting and vast that researchers with the University of California at San Diego, led by Albert Yu-Min Lin, have outsourced the search to the general public.
“This is a needle in a haystack problem where the appearance of the needle is unknown,” wrote Lin, who has been described as a “modern-day Indiana Jones” and has been photographed dramatically riding horses across the Mongol expanse. So “we charged an online crowd of volunteer participants with the challenge of finding the tomb of Ghengis Khan, an archaeological enigma of unknown characteristics widely believed to be hidden somewhere within the range of our satellite imagery.”
One of the problems, however, is that there was so much land to study. The sweep of Genghis Khan’s empire, which began when he united Mongolia’s warring tribes in the early 13th century, is dizzying to contemplate. It first subsumed all of what is modern-day Mongolia before spilling across Asia on the might of the Mongol invasions, conquering terrain from China to the gates of Western Europe by the turn of the century. Many now suspect Khan’s final resting place is much closer to the roots of his power — in Mongolia itself, near the site of his palace, which sat around 150 miles eastof the nation’s modern capital.
So in a partnership with National Geographic, Lin’s team constructed a landscape of more than 84,000 tiles that spanned more than 6,000 square kilometers and launched what they called a “virtual exploration system” in 2010. The task for participants: Tag anything that looks like it could be an “archaeological enigma that lacks any historical description of its potential visual appearance.”
It was essential to get help, the paper said: “A single archaeologist would have to scroll through nearly 20,000 screens before covering the whole area.” Still, no one expected they would get so much of it.
More than 10,000 people gave it a go, tagging anything they thought looked like a location where a great Mongol warlord would want to rest in peace. In all, they clocked more than three years worth of work — 30,000 hours — and generated more than 2 million tags. From that number, the researchers have culled 100 locations for further inquiry and identified 55 “potential archaeological anomalies” that ranged from the Bronze Age to the Mongol period.
So far, no Khan yet. But the search is complicated by a number of factors unique to the quest for Khan’s tomb. As explained by Motherboard’s Ben Richmond, the Mongols absolutely hate archaeologists trampling on their turf disturbing the nation’s most holy sites. In fact, the spot where a lot of people thought Khan was buried is actually one of the country’s most sacred spots. It’s called Ikh Khorig, which translates literally to the “great taboo,” but is often called the “forbidden zone” by outsiders.
Lin, who reports described as “obsessed” with Genghis Khan and finding his tomb, also searched the forbidden zone, but found zilch. “The team pushed its way through the thick, boar-infested brush surrounding it and clambered to the top,” as National Geographic described one of the expedition’s analyses. “A test probe, however, revealed that the hill was just a hill.”
But now, thanks to his crowdsourcing study, he has a whole new slew of potential sites to explore and try and discover the tomb. Still, how to side-step Mongolia’s reservations about expeditions? “Mongolians detest any attempt to touch graves, or even wander around graveyards,” Mongolia Today said. “According to ancient tradition, burial spots are forbidden areas in which no one is allowed.”
So he hopes to find it from space — and now he says he can.

Rapid Desert Formation May Have Destroyed China's 1st Kingdom





The first known Chinese kingdom may have been destroyed when its lands rapidly transformed into deserts, possibly driving its people into the rest of China, a new study finds.
This new finding suggests that the kingdom may have been more important to Chinese civilization than experts had thought, researchers say.
Prior research suggests the earliest Chinese kingdom might have been Hongshan, established about 6,500 years ago. This was about 2,400 years before the supposed rise of the Xia Dynasty, the first dynasty in China described in ancient historical chronicles. The kingdom's name, which means "Red Mountain," comes from the name of a site in the Inner Mongolia region of China.

Past excavations have uncovered Hongshan sites across northern China, including the Goddess Temple, an underground complex in the northeastern Chinese province of Liaoning known for murals painted on its walls and a clay female head with jade inlaid eyes.
Hongshan displayed some of the earliest known examples of jade working. The first dragonlike symbol of China may have been a fishlike creature made of jade in Hongshan, researchers said.

But the importance of Hongshan to Chinese history remains a topic of debate, investigators added. The middle reaches of the Yellow River are commonly thought to be the cradle of Chinese civilization, and Hongshan was typically seen as a remote culture outside these key areas. However, the Goddess Temple, as well as remnants of sheep bones that indicate trade with Mongolian shepherds, suggest Hongshan had a complex culture.
"We seem to see evidence that Hongshan was far more important to early Chinese culture than it's currently given credit for," said study co-author Louis Scuderi, a paleoclimatologist at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. "Archaeologists are having a hard time figuring out what the importance of Hongshan culture was."
To shed light on Hongshan, scientists investigated the Hunshandake Sandy Lands of Inner Mongolia, in the eastern portion of northern China's desert belt. The researchers found abundant remnants of Hongshan pottery and stone artifacts there, in an area located about 185 miles (300 kilometers) west of where the Hongshan culture was first recognized in Liaoning. The variety and large number of artifacts found in the region suggest a relatively dense population that depended on hunting and fishing, the researchers said. Prior research had estimated that the deserts in northern China are about 1 million years old. However, these new findings suggest that the desert of Hunshandake is only about 4,000 years old. Lead study author Xiaoping Yang, a geologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, along with Scuderi and colleagues, detailed their findings online today (Jan. 5) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Rapid changes
The researchers analyzed environmental and landscape changes in Hunshandake over the past 10,000 years. The patterns of dunes, and depressions between those dunes, suggest that Hunshandake's terrain was once controlled by rivers and lakes.
The scientists dated the age of quartz from the area using a technique known as optically stimulated luminescence, which measures the minute amount of light that long-buried objects can emit, in order to see how long they have been buried. They found that the earliest shorelines in Hunshandake formed during the early Holocene Epoch, which began about 12,000 years ago, at the beginning of a humid period in Inner Mongolia.
Lake sediments indicated that relatively deep water existed in Hunshandake between 5,000 and 9,000 years ago. Pollen in those sediments revealed the presence of birch, spruce, fir, pine and oak trees.
"We're amazed by how much water there was back then," Scuderi said. "There were very, very large lakes, and grasslands and forests. And based on all the artifacts we've found out there, there was clearly a very large population along the lake shores."
However, the scientists found the area rapidly turned dry starting about 4,200 years ago. The scientists calculated more than 7,770 square miles (20,000 square km) in Hunshandake — a region about the size of New Jersey — transformed into desert.
The researchers suggested that water that used to flow into the area was hijacked by a river that permanently diverted water eastward, leading to rapid desertification. Hunshandake remains arid and is unlikely to revert back to wetter conditions, the researchers said.
The scientists noted that, at about the same time that Hunshandake dried out, a major climatic shift was occurring worldwide that caused extraordinary droughts on all of the continents in the Northern Hemisphere. "We think this drying happened in northern China as well, but was augmented by massive amounts of water getting diverted away from the area," Scuderi said.
This desertification likely devastated the Hongshan culture, the researchers said. It may have spurred a mass migration of northern China's early cultures into the rest of China, where they may have played formative roles in the rise of other Chinese civilizations.
"An important possible line of research in the future is to figure out how important the Hongshan culture was to the development of later Chinese culture," Scuderi said.
