'The Artful Steppe': Photos capture life along the historic Silk Road

During a May 2014 journey to Central Asia with Yale Educational Travel, faculty member Karen Polinger Foster became fascinated with the relationships between the people and the places, the ancient and the modern, along the historic Silk Road. Her images from that journey are featured in the photo essay "The Artful Steppe," now online at http://campuspress.yale.edu/artfulsteppe/.
Along with each image, Foster — who is affiliated with the Departments of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and of History of Art — provides insights into the region's history, cultures, and current challenges.
"The project was an exciting opportunity to bring my art historian's eye and professional interests in the Middle East to bear on this magical part of the world,” says Foster.
